What We’re Reading | August

I feel like I say this every month, but we’ve been reading up a storm.

To start, Zach and I were competing for the un-put-down-able memoir, Educated, by Tara Westover. It was so intriguing from start to finish, and I found it particularly interesting going into a very untraditional school year with my own kids. Chatting about the family dynamics and Tara’s resilience on our front porch was a great way to spend some August evenings.

I forgot to take a photo before returning it, but The Giver by Lois Lowry was a classic I had never read. It is fairly short but so thought-provoking.

If you’ve followed along this summer, I think this is my third Sue Monk Kidd novel. The Book of Longings has a fascinating premise wondering if Jesus could have been married and what that woman’s life might have been like. I wouldn’t say it convinced me of anything, but I find the idea of wondering about the Bible so freeing and childlike, so I enjoyed reading one person’s idea of what Jesus may have been like as a tradesman, son, brother, and possibly a husband. It reminded me a little of the novel, The Red Tent, based on the lives of Jacob’s wives.

I liked this tale of a brother and a sister whose lives are turned upside down with the death of their father. Throughout five decades, they find ways to cling to one another and discover how they want to live. The audiobook is read by Tom Hanks, and I’ve heard it’s fantastic too.

Here are a few books we’ve read together this month. The illustrated versions of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them were a big hit with our big kids. I read the picture books to our four-year-old multiple times throughout the week.
